Welcome to my very first beauty post! Today I’m going to line up a few of my favorite everyday beauty products. I’m going to tell you why they are my favorite, how long I’ve been using them, where you can find them and if they will work for you as well! All the products can be used for both men and women.
Avène eau Thermale Cleanance gel 
Oh my, I would move to Paris in a heartbeat if that would mean that I could get my hands on more of that good stuff Avène has to offer! Even though I’ve always been lucky to have good skin, when puberty started to catch up with me when I was around the age of 15, my journey for the perfect skin product begun. Easy, not too expensive and effective were my key terms. And I found just all of that in Avène. I first bought a flacon of the cleanser when I was in Paris in 2009, and I’ve been a fan ever since. I was searching for something that would help me regain my fresh and healthy look. Because you know what they say, your face is like your business card!
For who?
On the site it says that the product is for people with oily or blemished skin, but anybody can use the cleanser actually. The cleanser is a soap-free, parabens-free gel that gently cleanses your skin and leaves it feeling refreshed. The natural main ingredient (Cucurbita pepo) minimizes excessive tallow and the Avène Thermal spring water (that is an ingredient in all Avènes products) is soothing and anti-irritant, and will give your skin an instant feel good feeling. With the handy dosing cup on top, the right amount of gel can be measured for appliance on both face and body. I personally only apply it on my face & neckline.

Garnier Body Intensive 7 Days 
I got myself a flacon of Garnier 7 Days for the first time when it was on clearance at my local drugstore last summer. I hadn’t read anything about it prior tot that. But I just happened to need a new body lotion, and the brand I was using before the Intensive 7 Days of Garnier was nowhere to be found. The description promised me smoother skin in 7 days and although I was a little critical at first, I’ve been hooked ever since.
For who?
There are ‘Intensive 7 Days’ flacons for three skin types: normal, dry and very dry skin. So there is no reason to not try it at least once! I’m using the Intensive 7 Days with Shea butter and L-Bifidus for the very dry skin. I love that the lotion is rich in texture, but not greasy (like most of the lotions for dry skin). The skin absorbs the lotion very quickly and keeps you hydrated all day.

You can buy Garnier Intensive 7 Days at most of the drugstores, but to be certain where their sales points are you can also check their website. The price ranges from 4 to 5 euros depending on the type of lotion you need.
Nivea Pure Effect Wash Off 
For removing my make-up I usually use wipes. It’s quick and easy, but I’ve noticed however that my eyelashes hurt when I’m trying to remove my eye-make with them. Even worse, with the wipes I’m unable to remove all of my make-up. That’s why I decided to try the Nivea Pure Effect Wash Off gel. Niveas Pure Effect Wash Off is a oil-free gel that doesn’t only cleanse the skin from impurities, oil and make-up, it also helps preventing impurities. The gel is so mild that the skin doesn’t dry out. It doesn’t hurt my eyes/eyelashes, smells good and leaves my facial skin feeling clean and fresh, I couldn’t be happier!

Palmolive Thermal Mineral Massage
Last but not least is the Palmolive Thermal Mineral Massage shower gel. I’ve just recently started using it and the results are really amazing. The unique combination of Dead sea extract and aloe vera gently peels of dead skin cells and leaves your body feeling silky smooth. Apply a body lotion after using the shower gel to get the maximum effect.
For who?
Anybody can use the shower gel, but I highly recommend it to people with dry skin. The improvements in softness of your skin will start in just a few days.

Nieuw jaar nieuwe concepten zullen jullie vast denken! En jazeker, ik ben weer eens begonnen met het uitdenken van wat ideeën. Maar geen nood! De Highlight Classics zoals de ‘Highlight Comedy Night’, ‘Upcoming Youtube Talent’ en de ‘Author Talks’ zul je met regelmaat terug blijven zien. Because you shouldn’t try to fix something that ain’t broken.
Verder zullen ook de wat nieuwere concepten zoals de ‘Survivalen in de Rimboe’, ‘Mens’, ‘Trendreport’ en ‘Relaties & Daten’ posts voorbij blijven komen. En ohja, vergeet niet mijn signature special posts, zoals de ‘Highlight Tribute’ en de ‘International Posts’.

Highlight Talent Interview
Het talent op de wereld is op zijn minst overweldigend te noemen. Na een tijdje de ‘Upcoming Youtube Talent’ posts geschreven te hebben wilde ik me daarom ook graag gaan toeleggen op talent in eigen land. Hoewel het idee voor dit concept vorig jaar al bestond, ga ik er nu pas echt werk van maken. So stay tuned voor de fantastische talenten die je nog voorbij gaat zien komen!
Health
Ik betrap mezelf er steeds vaker op dat ik zit googlen op gezondheid. Als de nerd die ik ben kan er dan ook een eeuwigheid over door blijven lezen, dus waarom niet al die kennis lekker doorgeven? Denk bij health aan de nieuwste fitness trends, hippe sportwear, superfoods en lichaamsoefeningen voor thuis.
Technology posts
De 21e eeuw brengt veel innovatie met zich mee op het gebied van technologie. Omdat ik het zelf altijd wel interessant om meer over grappige en vernieuwende gadgets te weten te komen heb ik besloten hier vaker over te schrijven. Ook om meer een allround blog te worden en jullie beter te voorzien.
Beauty
Een hele tijd heb ik erover nagedacht. To do, or not to do. Maar ik heb besloten dat ik het eigenlijk ook wel heel leuk vind om eens in de zoveel tijd een beauty update te doen. En nee mannen, jullie worden niet vergeten!

Meestal zal ik niet de persoon zijn om kritieken uit te delen, omdat ik altijd in de hoop verkeer dat er vast genoeg mensen rondlopen op de aardbol die niet verblind zijn door onzekerheid. Maar na de zoveelste meme gezien te hebben waarin (vaak van nature) tengere dames onder de bus gegooid worden heb ik besloten er toch iets van te zeggen.
Distorted Body Image
Vrouwen zijn vaak onzeker over vanalles, en veel van die onzekerheden zijn te wijten aan hun eigen appearence. Of beter gezegd die van een ander. Want de hate comments die ik vaak genoeg voorbij zie komen worden vreemd genoeg nooit aan mensen van het eigen postuur gericht, maar juist aan mensen die een ‘tengere’ bouw hebben. Als men de beredenering,”Ik haal een ander naar beneden om me zélf beter te voelen,” aanhoudt als een logische, dan vermoed ik dat dit door persoonlijke issues komt. Het is echter onnodige haat die voortkomt uit zwakte en waar verder niemand wat aan heeft.
Women shouldn’t stab women in the back. We zijn allemaal mooi op onze eigen manier en niemand is beter dan een ander.
Dus ben je big & fabulous? Wees trots maar erken dat iedere vrouw uniek is en op haar eigen manier sexy kan zijn. Voor de mensen die slim & fabulous zijn, exact hetzelfde.

Iets meer dan een jaar geleden riep ik het ‘Upcoming Youtube Talent’ concept in het leven. In de heilige overtuiging dat ik het deed voor mijn trouwe Updaters, blijkt nu dat het me stiekem ook wel goed uitkwam dat ik schaamteloos uren en uren naar getalenteerde en veelal nog onbekende muzikanten kon kijken. Niet alsof ik iets beters te doen had, huiswerk bijvoorbeeld. Alles in de naam der kunst right?
Op basis van vooraf gekozen nummers selecteerde ik coveracts op originaliteit, personality, kwaliteit en diversiteit. Van zusjes tot beste vrienden, koppels tot internet friends, de samenstellingen van de acts waren uiteenlopend en verrijkend. Mijn favoriete gevonden sterren in de dop ben ik blijven volgen, let’s see who’s making it big!
Pentatonix
De accapella groep Pentatonix leerde ik kennen toen ik bezig was met het zoeken naar originele covers voor Thrift Shop. De vocal group bestaande uit leadzangers (van links naar rechts) Mitch Grassi (21), Scott Hoying (22), Kristie Maldonado (22), beatboxer Kevin ‘K.O.’ Olusola (25) en vocal bass Avi Kaplan (24), waren precies waar ik naar op zoek geweest was voor de post. Ze hadden humor, een eclitische stijl and boy wat waren zij on point. De groep vergaarde bekendheid door Youtube filmpjes te plaatsen van hun arrangementen en door mee te doen aan de Amerikaanse zangtalent show ‘The Sing Off’. Ze groeiden als groep, perfectioneerden hun craft en wonnen uiteindelijk de show!
Where are they now?
Na The Sing Off verhuist de groep naar Los Angeles om te werken aan hun EP’s, PTX Vol 1 & PTXmas (beide via Madison Gate Records). Ze debuteerden beide keren op de Billboard’s Top 200, verkochten meer dan 125.000 albums in totaal en toerden twee keer door de V.S. en recent zelfs in Europa. Hun nieuwe album PTX Vol 2 is nu uit en bevat niet alleen covers maar ook originele soundtracks. Met hun unieke sound, stijl en uitstraling veroveren ze nu de wereld, one step at the time. VanJess
Deze zangsensatie is twee zusters sterk en man wat zijn ze getalenteerd! De gezusters VanJess ofwel (van rechts naar links) Ivana (21) en Jessica (19) timmeren al sinds 2009 hard aan de weg. Sinds het moment dat een goede vriendin me linkte aan hun muziek probeer ik ze te volgen. De van oorsprong Nigeriaanse zangeressen begonnen met het maken van originele arrangementen op bestaande nummers en vergaarden zo bekendheid. In 2012 is het dan eindelijk zover, hun eerste single ‘Drumroll’ komt uit, een VanJess orginal waarin ook hun eigenzinnige persoonlijke stijl goed naar voren komt. Maar van achteroverleunen is geen sprake, in juli 2013 komt hun debuut EP [00 Till Escape] uit waar vijf eigen nummers op staan.
Where are they now?
De dames zijn nog niet bij een platenmaatschappij getekend, maar zijn met hun 29 miljoen video views en meer dan 130.000 Youtube subcribers well on their way to fame! De focus ligt nu op het uitbrengen van eigen muziek die te omschrijven is als een eclictische sound van R&B en Soul waarbij er invloeden van pop/rock terug te horen zijn. Het laatste woord is nog zeker niet over hen gesproken, kom meer over ze te weten via hun website of FB pagina.
Halle & Chloe
Don’t be fooled by their cute faces, want deze dames zijn de real deal! De mulitigetalenteerde zusjes (van links naar rechts) Chloe (14) en Halle (12) zijn goed op weg om een supersterren status te bereiken. Ik leer de beide klassiek getrainde muzikanten, Chloe als pianist en Halle als gitarist, kennen wanneer ik op zoek ben naar goede covers van Diamonds voor mijn allereerste ‘Upcoming Youtube Talent’ post. De zusjes Bailey staan bekend om hun unieke individuele sound en zangwijze maar weten desondanks altijd arrangementen te maken waarbij beide stemmen goed tot hun recht komen. Chloe & Halle zijn al sinds 2009 actief op Youtube, hebben meer dan 10 miljoen views, een sterke fanbase die ze liefkozend hun ‘Bailiens’ noemen (afgeleid van hun achternaam Bailey) en bovendien meer dan 230.000 Youtube subcribers.

Een aantal van de projecten waarbij Chloe & Halle betrokken zijn geweest zijn: “Meet the Browns”, “House of Payne”, “The Fighting Temptations”, “The Last Holiday”, “Gospel Hill”, “Joyful Noise” , en Disney Channel’s “Let it Shine”. Verder werden ze in 2012 gekroond tot Radio Disney’s Next Big Thing en heeft Beyonce eind 2013 hun cover van haar nummer ‘Pretty Hurts’ met haar Instagram volgers gedeeld. And things can only go up hill if you got Queen B on your side!

Zoals jullie weten is de entertainment business no joke, ‘one day you’re in, and the next day you’re out.‘ Gwen Stefani is het schoolvoorbeeld van sustainability. Zangers, stijlicoon, modeontwerpster en niet te vergeten fashionable mama is al sinds 1986 in de game en niet van plan om anytime soon uit de scene te vertrekken. Al jaren ben ik fan van haar eigenzinnige stijl en vandaar ook deze Highlight Tribute ter ere van de enige echte Harajuku Princess!
Factsheet
Gwen Stefani, geboren op 3 oktober 1969 is het tweede oudste kind uit vier voor ouders Patti en Dennis Stefani. Al op jonge leeftijd kwam Stefani in aanraking met muziek, en al gauw werd haar talent ontdekt. Om haar zangtalent in goede banen te kunnen leiden ging ze muzieklessen nemen.
Wanneer haar broer haar in 1986 uitnodigt om haar vocalen te lenen voor een nummer van No Doubt begint haar muzikale carrière pas echt. Hoewel de band in 1991 bij Interscope Records tekent is hun ska-sound aanvankelijk niet zo succesvol, dit kwam door de populariteit van grunge. Maar gelukkig keerde het tij! Blik mee terug naar de golden days van No Doubt.
In 2004 besluit Gwen het over een andere boeg te gooien en een solo carrière na te jagen. Haar debuutalbum ‘Love. Angel. Music. Baby.’ komt in november van dat jaar uit en toont een diversiteit aan stijlen. Als geen ander kan ik me nog herinneren dat Hollaback Girl uit kwam en Gwen vergezelt werd door haar ‘Harajuku Girls’ die tot de dag van vandaag deel uitmaken van haar possey. In datzelfde jaar richt Stefani haar gelijknamige kledinglijn L.A.M.B. op, wat een slimme carrièremove blijkt. Met een familiegeschiedenis van naaisters, het feit dat ze al jaren haar eigen performance outfits voor No Doubt maakt én een scherpe en bovendien eigenzinnige stijl slaat Gwen de spijker op de kop. De modewereld reageert enthousiast en celebs zoals Teri Hatcher en Nicole Kidman staan voor haar in de rij.
Wegens groot commercieel succes en het feit dat L.A.M.B. te duur is voor de meeste van haar fans breidt Gwen uit 2005 met haar betaalbaardere lijn ‘Harajuku Lovers’, een ode aan haar liefde voor Japan. Deze powervrouw is still going strong en ze heeft haar nieuwe kledinglijn DWP, ofwel Department of Water and Power, om het te bewijzen. Aanvankelijk zou dit een duurzaam geproduceerde denimlijn worden en vandaar ook dat ze de handen ineen sloeg met denim guru Michael Glasser. Ondanks dat broeken nog steeds een hoofdrol spelen in de uiteindelijke collectie had de tweetal een change of heart. Er zou geen denim gebruikt worden in de lijn. In plaats daarvan opteerden ze onder andere voor de milieuvriendelijke stof lyocell en pasten ze dezelfde was- en verftechnieken toe als bij denim om zo de denim look na te bootsen. De lijn bestaat uit 18 stuks en heeft een prijsrange van €58 tot €95, de items zullen alleen online beschikbaar zijn dus houd het wereld wijde web goed in de gaten!

No better way to start my year than to return to you! And I must say: it’s great being back. I thought it would be fun to start off with a style post, so sit back and let’s turn up the sassiness in your personal style!
Signature style
Signature style is something that is actually very underestimated by a lot of people. This is quite sad because although you can’t change your genes, what you cán change is the way you wish to present yourself. I for instance have tried so many styles that when I look back sometimes I go: O no I didn’t?! But it’s great to go through a style revolution and to grow and learn as an individual.
My journey started with trying to be like everyone else but never quite being able to live up to their style, my mom would be like “you don’t have to be like all those other kids”, but you don’t really care when all you want is to fit in. So how did I do it? Well when I was about 16 years old I started wearing all black and occasionally combining it with bright colors. I slowly started making the transition to what is my current style: a modern take on the preppy office style mixed with a little rock & roll.
And so my style revolution started, with some pretty good highs and some very terrible lows, but hey taste doesn’t grow over night! I purchased fake nerd glasses, because people were calling me that already so thought I’d better own the title. Then I started wearing blazers, slim fit clothes, beanies, skirts, highwaisted shorts, dresses and even high heels. Believe me I tried almost everything in the book to the point that I even started sewing my own clothes. Urban, minimalist, la garconne, colourblocking: you name it, I did it! So it has taken me quite a while to figure out what works for my personality, body shape, skin shade and at which stores I could get the desired clothes and accessories with the right value for my money. And today is your lucky day because I’m going to share the basics of great style with you so you can take a shortcut in your own personal style revolution!
Back to basics
I apply the four S’es when, shopping, dressing or styling. Simple, smart, sexy and sophisticated.
Simple: I’ve noticed that very complicated styles don’t work for me, I don’t feel comfortable moving in them. And because I’m a active person feeling restricted from movement doesn’t make life easier, that’s why less is more has been my motto for the past years. But if layers work for you, go for it! Just don’t feel the burden to do so.
Smart: I love dressing smart, like literally. Blazers, chino’s, briefcase and everything. But by smart I actually mean ‘know how to look your best’. That means detect your flaws and your strong points. Accentuate your strengths, disguise your weaknesses and get a more ‘put together’ overall look.
Sexy: I think confidence is what makes a outfit sexy, even if you’re wearing a garbage bag. As long as you feel great in what you wear it is totally going to shine through (not that I’m now encouraging you to start wearing garbage bags!).
Sophisticated: Set yourself apart from the masses and be elegant and classy. No need to be flashy to get noticed. Make sure the items of choice are in harmony with each other in color and snit.

Before you can apply the S’es correctly it’s important to know what body type you are.

Don’t take it too literal though, everybody is unique and you have to try different things before you know for sure that something doesn’t work for you.

General must haves
Start with the basics to get your renewed style going, it’s important however to keep in mind that your follow up purchases will be combinable with the wardrobe you already have otherwise you’ll be spending more money than needed. My advise is to go to ‘actual’ stores at first, when you’ve figured out which brands, fits and colors work for you, you can start ordering online and make more expensive investments.

Mediocracy is a choice
A brand-new year has begun and I’m betting you have your short list with new year resolutions ready. People are always telling me that those new years resolutions are useless, but I actually stick to mine, year after year. It all depends on your mindset, because life is like a game you see. Let’s take for instant basketball, I’ve played that sport most of my life and I can say that I was definitely in it to win it. Yes of course you win some and you lose some but in the end victory is the highest achievement. And if people say you should play sports just for the fun I really do disagree with that. That’s like saying that striving for mediocracy is okay, and like… it’s not. So I’m dedicating this post to all those positive minds who are ready to make changes in their lives this year. Striving for success isn’t in the first place about being better than someone else, it is about being the best version of yourself that you can possibly be. About reinventing yourself over and over and being able to put things in perspective, your successes and your downfalls. Because in the end they make you who you are and there is a lesson in every experience.

Dit scenario is er een dat iedereen kent, en waarschijnlijk ook regelmatig mee struggelt (of je er nu wel of niet voor uit komt is een ander verhaal). Voor de een is het niet te vaak swipen met de creditcard, voor de ander toch maar eens wat minder obsessief gaan gamen, maar bij is het een stiekeme fascinatie voor een kar. Om precies te zijn: de döner kebab kar, zoals ik hem liefdevol heb omgedoopt.
Want in mijn straat staat er een kar, een kar gevuld met de guilty pleasures die ik juist zo zorgvuldig mogelijk probeer te vermijden. Van Turkse Pizza tot god weet wat al niet meer, maar het ruikt goed, heel goed en daar begint dus de tweestrijd, of ik “toch maar eens een keer een lekkere döner moet bestellen, want het was toch alweer zo lang geleden…” Maar firm houd ik mezelf voor dat ik voor minder geld een lekkere en bovendien gezonde maaltijd kan fixen. Beacuse once you get hooked… Juist. Onder dat mom schrijd ik vooruit terwijl de ogen van de döner kebab mannen in mijn rug branden.
Nu alweer bijna een jaar, loop ik dag in dag uit langs deze toko. Soms met een steelse zijdelingse blik, maar steeds vaker vastberaden op mijn bestemming afgaand. Iedere keer dat ik hem getrotseerd heb is weer een winst, hoewel ik niet zal ontkennen dat de geur me blijft achtervolgen. Gister liep ik weer eens langs de kar, helemaal in die jasje-dasje-stijl die ik zo adoreer, en bedacht me hoe vaak die döner mannen me wel niet hadden zien lopen in het afgelopen jaar. Onderweg de uni, terug van het sporten, op de fiets naar het werk, doordrenkt van de regen. Soms zelfs meerdere keren op een dag, kledingwissel inclusief.
Ik denk er wel eens aan om gedag te gaan zeggen, gewoon voor de gezelligheid en om te zien wie die mysterieuze kebab makende mannen zijn. Of ze me zouden herkennen? Ik betwijfel het, maar misschien ga ik er toch maar een keertje langs en wie weet bestel ik dan ook nog wel wat döner kebab, gewoon, om hen een plezier te doen!
