Today I’m turning up the heat with my Upcoming Youtube Talent Special post by choosing a song that’s really hard to cover. My mission was to find the beautiful pearls out there that had the guts to not only cover this song but also KILL it. That’s why today’s coversong is ‘Thrift Shop’ by Macklemore ft. Wanz. I saw them preform on the Ellen show, and I was instantly hooked.

Als een echte kind uit de 90s ben ik opgegroeid met het legendarische fenomeen van de boybands en girlbands. Blue, West Life, S Club 7 en de Spice Girls zijn slechts enkele grote namen. Het overschot van deze getalenteerde en niet te vergeten jonge mensen (die een groot gedeelte van mijn jeugd op handen en voeten gedragen werden) is nu allang ver-armd en vergeten.
Ik kan me nog herinneren dat ik als 10-jarige streetdance fanaat altijd maar bezig was met hippe choreografieën te bedenken, waar ik dan ook was. Op een middag ging ik bij een vriendinnetje een aantal straten verderop spelen. Terwijl ik haar kamer betrad werd ik toegezongen door de Spice Girls die keihard door de speakers schalden met het nummer Wannabe, urenlang heb ik daar toen gedanst op de nummers van onze fabulousSpice five, gehypnotiseerd door de zoete popklanken, maar helaas te enthousiast want ik kwam echt veelste laat thuis, I guess time flies when you’re having fun!
We zijn alweer een 12,5 jaar verder sinds de hit Wannabe de Spice Girls op slag bekend maakte. Hoewel de wegen zijn gescheiden en carrières zijn geflopt, ‘the one who is still standing’ is de onbetwiste Posh Spice, beter bekend als Victoria Beckham!
The name is Beckham, Victoria Beckham
Posh, zoals onze Vicky liefkozend door haar fans genoemd werd transformeerde van een onzekere popster tot een keiharde zakenvrouw, geroemd fashionista en een gerespecteerde fashion designer. Haar reis als een one-woman business begint voor Beckham wanneer zij tekent voor een platencontract met Telstar Records en 19 Management ter waarde van 1,5 miljoen pond. Een prachtig begin van een solo act zou je zeggen, maar al gauw bleek dat zingen in je eentje toch wel van een ander kaliber was dan in een all pop girl-band. Posh gooit het roer drastisch om wanneer haar eerste single ‘Let your head go’ niet de verwachtte successen behaalt. Ze besluit haar debuut album ‘Open Your Eyes’ niet uit te brengen, maar het in plaats daarvan over een geheel andere boeg te gooien en over te stappen op r&b en hip hop. De remix versie van haar single ‘This groove’ piekt op de 3e plaats in de chartlijsten van het Verenigde Koninkrijk, later zal blijken dat dit Beckhams enige single in de top 10 single zal zijn. Unlike de andere Spices behaalt ze op deze wijze dus geen enkele nummer 1 hit.
Gezien het woord ‘failure’ een major no-go is in lady Beckhams boekje moet ze een keuze maken die haar carrière voorgoed zal bepalen.
Victoria gaat (gedemotiveerd door de negatieve resultaten van haar inspanningen als solo-act) vroegtijdig met muziek pensioen zodat ze al haar tijd en energie in haar andere grote passie kan stoppen: Fashion.
Queen V
Victoria bereikte als muzikant al snel de status van een stijlicoon door haar scherpe blik voor mode en eigenzinnige smaak. Maar ook als ontwerper bewees ze dat ze deze titel meer dan waard was. Ik heb een lijst gemaakt van een aantal Highlight momenten in haar carrière.
2000: Een gastverschijning als model voor de London Fashionweek catwalkshow van Maria Grachvogel (tevens haar debuut als model).
2004: Victoria slaat de handen ineen met Rock & Republic en ontwerpt een limited edition lijn VB Rocks die voornamelijk bestaat uit jeans.
2006: La Beckham brengt haar eigen eyewear lijn uit genaamd dvb Eyewear, launched in datzelfde jaar ook haar eigen jeansline dvb Style en als klapper op de vuurpijl ook nog een hem & haar parfumlijn.
2007: Vic wint maar liefst twee British Glamour Magazine Awards (“Woman of the Year” and “Entrepreneur of the Year”).
2008: Victoria schittert niet alleen als het gezicht van de voorjaarscollectie van Marc Jacobs maar toont dat ze de real deal is door in ditzelfde jaar ook haar eigen high-end fashion show te presenteren op de New York International Fashion Week, en gooit daar hoge ogen. Ciritici zijn het er over eens dat ze een indrukwekkend debuut heeft gemaakt. Door op maar liefst drie verschillende edities (Britse, Indiase, Russische) Vogues te stralen in minder dan 1 jaar tijd maakt La Beckham haar statement compleet, haar status als Fashion Icoon blijkt onbetwistbaar.
2011: In dit jaar krijgt Victoria de prestigieuze “Designer of the Year Award” uitgereikt, dit is na de lange weg die ze af heeft gelegd een mooie bekroning op al het harde werken.
Ik zeg petje af voor Victoria Beckham, ze heeft zich bewezen als een echte power-vrouw en ik wens haar nog vele goede jaren toe! Hieronder een selectie van mijn catwalk favourites van miss V, enjoy!

Today I’m finally doing a international post again because love is universal and Valentines day is the perfect moment to spread a lot of it.
What’s different about this post is that it’s Extra Extra Large, this means that I will be adding all the aspects of different types of Highlight posts into one really big one. For the unregular readers this means comedy, beauty, fashion, a few interesting facts and of course a whole lot of love! So if you are unsure what to do or who to spend your Valentine with: No worries, happy single or happily bound, Highlight is going to give you some tools from the first hand to make your Valentines Day the most memorable you ever had!

Three things you should know about Valentines Day
So what do we really know about Valentines Day? Most people know
that you can exchange cards, giveaway a rose or a bouquet, or bribe someone to love you by giving them too much chocolate… Let’s see how strong your Valentines knowledge is!
Did you know that in the Middle Ages, men and women drew names from a cup to see who their Valentine would be? They would wear those names for a week on their sleeves for everyone to see. In the English language you can find the traces of this old habit in the phrase- “to wear your heart on your sleeve”.
An old superstition says that the type of bird that you see on Valentines Day predicts the personality of your future husband. Starling: a poor man Goldfinch: a millionaire Blackbird: a priest or spiritual man Crossbill: an argumentative man Robin: a man who fights crime Owl: no man, you’ll be an old spinster Seeing pigeons on Valentine says nothing about the kind of man you’ll marry, but it is a prelude to a long and happy marriage.
The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were tortured. There is one legend that says hat Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he forbade marriage for young men. Valentine, realized the injustice of this decision, and secretly continued to perform marriages for young lovers. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he should be put to death.

Making Valentine memorable A bit nervous because it’s your first Valentines Day actually being bound to someone? How exciting! Congrats! So now you must be thinking, “Great great, thanks a lot, but give me some proper advice on what I could do to make it a memorable day Highlight“, you could have guessed that was exactly what I was thinking too! I’m a romantic at heart, so I did some work for you guys because I hope your Valentine turns out wonderful.
Playing the Game How you choose to celebrate your Valentines Day depends on your character and your lovers character of course. I decided to do give you tips on three types of dates, the Classic date, the Adventurous date and the Romantic date. Surely there are many other types of dates, but I’m focussing on these three because I think almost anyone would enjoy at least one of the three.
Classic Date
I’m started off with the Classic date because it’s safe and hard to mess up. There are two ways of doing it: Going out for dinner or Cooking dinner at your home.
Going out for dinner Guys please, bring your A-game and look sharp. Make sure your hair is cut, your facial hair is trimmed, you have your cologne on, and your clothes are appropriate. Pick your girl or boy up in time, if there is one day we do NOT want to be waiting it’s Valentines Day. Reserve at an intimate restaurant, and make sure it fits your budget but especially your personal taste. Plan a fun surprise for during the dinner, like a little firework or a song you’ve written yourself to play. I’m just brainstorming with you, it’s up to you to make it memorable.
Cooking dinner at home
You first have to decide how you are going to do it. Are going to do a surprise dinner? Or are you going to cook together and then enjoy the meal, either way should be fun. Make sure the setting is romantic by switching off most lights and lighting the whole room with candles. Add a nice little musical undertone, and I think you can’t go wrong, enjoy!
Adventurous Date
I guess you guys like some action and want to be original for a change, you’re not just doing a dinner.. NO, you are going all the way.
If you got the money to spend you could do a trip with a air balloon and make a nice picnic basket with some home made treats, don’t forget to bring some roses too!
You could also decide to spend your date with other couples you are befriended with and go for example for a paintball fight! It’s fun, interactive and very adventurous, I know I wouldn’t turn that offer down! So go get yourself a little dirty and enjoy a good meal afterwards, that’s one Valentines Day he or she will never forget!
Romantic Date
I guess the Romanic date and the Classic date are similar, but the Romantic one is for the people who really want to stand out. By that I mean, be original, show him or her that you really tried to make some effort. Take a boat ride or dine on a floating ship and let them play his or her favorite song whiles you hand out your present, or blindfold your partner and take them to a surprise place where you have like written a message with rose leaves (just brainstorming). Cancel all your appointments and sweep her/him of their feet and take them away for a long weekend… Just popping some ideas here, and I hope you will continue my brainstorm. I’m sure you’ll make it the most romantic Valentines Day ever!
Does all the above not apply to you? So what! There are so many other things you can do on Valentines Day, don’t forget Valentines Day is also a moment to be thankful for your friends and family. Write them a card, give them a box with chocolates or just be a good friend and go for a visit. Maybe you can cook dinner together and watch a corny Valentine Movie on TV, and who knows who you’ll be with next year this time. You are single and fabulous, never forget!

Mijn god, het is het is nu wel meer dan de hoogste tijd voor wat fatsoenlijk vermaak, want de afgelopen twee weken van mijn leven waren nog net geen living hel. Deadlines die me om de nek vlogen, een tentamen waar je u tegen kon zeggen, en om het af te maken een zwakke weerstand waardoor ik een aantal dagen uit de running was. Wauw, nu ik alles zo getypt zie lijkt het bijna nog erger… laten we maar snel stoppen met het bespreken van mijn zware studentenbestaan en doorgaan met een aantal hilarische filmpjes. Na een hele lange en slopende werkdag gister (waarbij ik uiteraard weer alle hoeken van de winkel heb gezien) probeerde ik nog net niet dood te zoeken naar een geschikt nummer voor een nieuwe Upcoming Youtube Takent post. Ik wilde een nummer die muzikaal gezien uitdagend was en niet zo gemakkelijk om te coveren. Voor deze editie van Upcoming Youtube Talent heb ik gekozen voor : Who’s laughing now, van Jessie J. Toen ik het nummer voor het eerst hoorde kreeg ik kippenvel, en dat krijg ik nog steeds als ik de clip zie. Het is zeker geen ‘ik wil zielig doen’ boodschap, maar het draagt juist een positieve energie uit. Ik denk dat veel van ons zich goed met Jessie kunnen identificeren in dit nummer, want uiteindelijk is de wereld maar een rare plaats waar iedereen zich op zijn tijd een alien voelt.
Ik heb geprobeerd langer door te klikken op youtube om zo ook bij mensen te komen die in normale omstandigheden niet de views krijgen die ze wel nodig hebben zodat ze gemotiveerd blijven om zichzelf te verbeteren: Kijk, luister en geniet van wat aanstormend talent!
